Timing is the single most common question we get about maternity photography. Book too early and the bump hasn't fully rounded out; book too late and you risk going into labor before the session. Here's how to get it right.
The Best Trimester for Maternity Photos
Most expecting mothers get the best results between 28 and 34 weeks. By this point your bump is full and rounded, you can still move comfortably for a range of poses, and you're unlikely to feel too fatigued for a 1-2 hour session. This is the sweet spot we recommend for the vast majority of bookings.
How Far in Advance Should You Book
Aim to lock in your date 3-4 weeks before your ideal shoot week. This gives you time to plan outfits, coordinate with your partner, and choose your theme without rushing — and it secures your preferred studio slot, since weekend dates fill up quickly in the third trimester.
Special Timing Considerations
- Carrying twins or a high-risk pregnancy: book 2-4 weeks earlier than usual, since these pregnancies more often arrive ahead of the due date.
- Second or later pregnancies: bumps tend to show earlier and drop sooner, so many mothers prefer 26-30 weeks.
- Planning an outdoor shoot: keep a flexible backup date in mind for weather, alongside your studio option.
- Always check with your doctor before scheduling if you have any pregnancy complications.
